Often the first stage in a project is a request from the planning authority for a Desk
Based
Assessment.
A review of historic records such as maps, aerial photographs and known archaeology in the vicinity of a proposed development site serves as a tool for understanding the past use of the area.
When Groundworks Archaeology is commissioned to undertake a Desk Based Assessment, we inspect the Historic Environment Record, county record office, historic maps, archives and other national sources of data. Following analysis of the available records, we produce a comprehensive report which details not only known archaeology in the vicinity of the potential development site, but also an analysis of any later impacts that might affect its preservation. This might include such activities as quarrying, building or landscaping. This allows an assessment of the archaeological potential of the site which is used by the planning authority to determine the need or otherwise for further investigation.
Undertaking this type of archaeological assessment early in the planning application process can help to avoid expensive delays caused by unexpected discoveries on site once a development is underway. If an assessment concludes there is a risk of archaeology, in consultation with the Planning Authority, we can negotiate a cost-effective strategy for mitigating any threat to potential archaeology from future development.
Matrix Planning has commissioned Groundworks Archaeology for a number of sizeable projects in recent years, ranging from desk-based assessments to evaluations. James is always happy to help at short notice and is highly enthusiastic. He is realistic and readily understands project constraints.
We have found him to be very knowledgeable about the planning application process when it comes to addressing archaeological conditions. He has liaised on our behalf with the various planning authorities to establish the parameters of the works required, thus ensuring that we were able to comply with the conditions without incurring significant costs or delays.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend their services to anyone else undertaking a development project, whatever its size or scale."
