Groundworks Archaeology was commissioned by a private individual who wanted to build an extension to their existing property to undertake a desk-based assessment.

The desk based assessment concluded that although there was potential for the presence of archaeological features, a map regression identified evidence of previous structures which would have impacted archaeological preservation. As such, the archaeological potential was deemed to be low and the recommendation was for no further work.

In this instance, by commissioning a paper-based investigation at an early stage the client was able to mitigate their costs by avoiding a condition which required fieldwork.
